Pre-College Program

The amount of daily homework will vary among courses and may take up to several hours per day.

Summer College Program

Students should plan to spend 15-20 hours/week on this course. Please also be aware that faculty will begin corresponding with students during Week Zero of the course (one week before the official start date of the course), and that some interaction with the course may be required at that time. Students should begin checking the Canvas course site regularly one week prior to the official start of the term.

Pre-College & Summer College Online Course

Online summer courses have required synchronous/live sessions Monday - Friday. Students must be available to sign into and virtually attend the course online during those times (noted as the course meeting times- all times listed are Eastern, local to Atlanta). Each course will also involve asynchronous material that you access on your own time in addition to standard amounts of readings and course assignments.

Technology

Technology needs to consider:

  • Windows or Apple Computer
  • High speed internet connection (dial up is not sufficient)
  • Microphone headset and webcam
  • Emory College Online courses utilize the Canvas platform and Zoom Video Conferencing for synchronous (live) sessions.

Netiquette

During synchronous class meetings:

  • Keep video on whenever possible. If you are having internet issues, please contact your instructor as soon as possible.
  • Check browsers and documents before sharing and avoid sharing content that is inappropriate for class.
  • Use virtual backgrounds to protect your privacy.
  • Dress appropriately, as you would for face-to-face class.
  • Use mute function in a large class when you are not talking.
  • Wait until the person finishes talking before you start to talk.

When using an online discussion board:

DO:
  • Check grammar and spelling before posting
  • Credit others by citing your sources
  • Use standard fonts optimized for online reading & sizes that are easily readable
  • Be concise
DO NOT:
  • Use sarcasm, profanity or offensive language
  • Write in all caps, as it can be interpreted as yelling
  • Use slang or emoticons
  • Share private or sensitive information

Residency

The Pre-College Program offers both residential and commuter options. Residential students have the opportunity to experience the independence and responsibility of college life.

Emory Summer College is a nonresidential program. All students participating in courses on campus must live locally and commute.

On-Campus Residence

The Emory residential experience is safe and secure.  Each student is given an access card to the residence hall.  No one can enter the building without an access card.  Should any emergency arise, Emory Police are always available.

  • All students in noncredit courses are eligible
  • Housing fee and meal plans are included in program cost
  • Reside in an air-conditioned community in Turman Hall or Hamilton Holmes Hall
  • Access to communal refrigerator
  • Pre-assigned to a residence hall and roommate by the Residence Life staff
  • Supervision and academic support provided by Resident Advisors, who are current Emory undergraduate students
  • Access to Emory’s state of the art academic and recreational facilities

Local Residence (Commuter)

  • Must live or have living arrangements in metro Atlanta area [Please note: additional information regarding your living arrangements will be required]
  • Able to travel to and from campus each day for class
  • Access to the residence halls until curfew (11 pm on weeknights and midnight on weekends)
  • Participate in all activities and excursions (included in program cost)
  • Dining options are available on campus for students to purchase their own meals
  • Access to Emory’s state of the art academic and recreational facilities
